There’s nothing quite like the aroma of freshly baked hot cross buns filling your home, soft, spiced and gently sweet, they are a true Easter tradition loved by families everywhere.
Whether enjoyed warm with butter in the morning or shared over tea, hot cross buns bring comfort, flavour and a sense of togetherness to the season.

Ingredients
For the dough:
- 4 cups cake flour
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp mixed spice
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- 60g melted butter
- 1 egg
- 1 cup raisins or sultanas
Ingredients to make the crosses:
- ½ cup flour
- 5–6 tbsp water
For the glaze section:
- 2 tbsp apricot jam (warmed)

Method
1. Prepare the dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, spices and salt. Mix well. Add the warm milk, melted butter and egg. Then mix until a soft dough forms. Gently fold in the raisins or sultanas.
2. Knead and rise
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover and allow to rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
3. Shape the buns
Divide the dough into equal portions and roll into smooth balls. Place them close together on a lined baking tray. Cover and allow to rise again for 30–40 minutes until beautifully puffy.
4. Add the crosses
Mix the flour and water into a smooth paste. Spoon into a piping bag and pipe crosses over each bun.
5. Bake to golden perfection
Bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and fragrant.
6. Glaze and serve
Brush the warm buns with apricot jam for a glossy finish. Serve fresh, warm and ready to enjoy.
