With just R900 to their name, Allan and Margaret Hirsch stretched every cent to build what would become one of South Africa’s most loved appliance retailers. It wasn’t easy. Every decision mattered. Every opportunity counted.
Training was another early challenge. In those busy early days, Allan had to juggle running the business while building a team that reflected the values he believed in.
Politeness. Cleanliness. Teamwork.
And most importantly, putting the customer first.
These weren’t just guidelines, they became the foundation of the Hirsch’s culture.

As Hirsch’s began to grow, Allan recognised something powerful:

A Defining Turning Point
One of the most pivotal moments in Hirsch’s journey came in 1983.
Allan and Margaret introduced microwave cooking lessons, at a time when the technology was still new to many South Africans. Their passion for education led to an incredible opportunity when Panasonic invited them to Japan to deepen their knowledge.
When they returned, Margaret launched the first independent microwave cooking school in South Africa.
This was more than innovation, it was transformation.
By teaching customers how to use their products, Hirsch’s created confidence, trust, and connection. Sales grew rapidly, and a new standard was set.
Today, that same spirit lives on through in-store demonstrations and fully equipped kitchens, ensuring customers always get more than just a product, they get an experience.
