What are the Benefits of the Defy Naturelight Technology?

What are the Benefits of the Defy Naturelight Technology? As we learn more about our natural environment and the incredible processes at work. It becomes apparent that we are all part of one gloriously complex system. From the simple yet efficient water cycle, to the microscopic fungi that break down plant matter, there is so much that we don’t see and can’t comprehend.

The light spectrum is one of these intriguing phenomena that impact us daily without us realising it.

The brains at Defy have taken this concept and applied it beautifully to their latest range of fridges, aptly calling it Naturelight Technology. We want to understand exactly what this is, and how it benefits us.

Defy Naturelight Technology: What is it?

In simple terms, Defy’s Naturelight technology uses blue, green, and red lights inside the fridge to mimic the natural cycle of the sun. Light of different wavelengths affects the living tissues of fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator, keeping them fresher longer.

Watch this quick video for a super-fast overview of this exciting technology.

How Does Light Colour Affect Living Organisms?

While we understand the concept behind this technology, it’s fascinating to understand the basis for it. Firstly, let’s understand the effect of the light spectrum on us humans.

Energy from the sun is vastly different from the artificial light that we use in our homes. The infra-red and ultra violet ends of the spectrum are invisible to the human eye, but still affect our bodies. For instance, UV rays promote the production of Vitamin D while infra-red light provides warmth and affects our skin tone.

However, natural light is dynamic. As the sun follows its path through the sky, the colours and intensity of the light change depending on the time of day, the season, and the weather conditions.

These daily cycles impact us in different ways; the bright light of the noonday sun offers a stimulating effect on our senses, while the gentle light of sunset slows us down and relaxes us. The angle of the sun’s rays and atmospheric filtering play a constant role in our mood, energy levels, and sleep as their hues shift from one spectrum to the next.

Plant Responses to the Light Spectrum

This full light spectrum is necessary for plant growth in all its stages, however plant growth and health rely heavily on the colors red and blue in the visible spectrum.

In order to understand how color lights affect plant growth, we must take into account photosynthetic processes, chlorophyll levels, and wavelengths. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants turn light, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen. A sugar, glucose is one of the main foods for plants, and as a result of photosynthesis, oxygen is produced.

However, photosynthesis will not happen without chlorophyll, which is what gives plants their green color and allows them to absorb light.

Considering chlorophyll is green, plants respond most efficiently to colors on the opposite side of the color spectrum, such as red and blue.

Blue Light

Blue light, that which beams down on us during the middle of a bright, sunny day, has a stimulating effect on us.

In plants, blue light is critical for seeds to sprout and develop in their early stages. It encourages the production of chlorophyll and allows the growing plant to create its own food source. Blue light can promote germination and ensure roots, stems, and leaves grow vigorously.

Red Light

As the sun dips lower on the horizon, we are treated to the spectrum of red and orange light. These filtered light waves are softer and have a relaxing effect on our bodies.

The red light spectrum helps plants to mature, to flower, grow more leaves, and increase production. In fact it’s during this red light phase that flowers bloom, and the far-red light helps plants to produce greater yields..

Green Light

The effects of green light on the human body are profound. They have been shown to induce the production of certain hormones that make us feel good while acting as pain relievers.

When a light spectrum contains up to 30% green light, it is just as effective as red and blue light for growing plants. Red and blue light are absorbed most by the upper leaves of plants, while green light is transmitted to the lower leaves for photosynthesis.

Practical Application for Today’s Consumers

With a clearer understanding of the impact of the light spectrum on living organisms. We start to see the wisdom of implementing this knowledge in today’s tech.

614lt Nature Light Side-by-Side

Defy have done exactly this with the Naturelight technology in some of their refrigerators. They tell us, “The Defy Naturelight Side-by-Side fridge technology uses three effective colours of light (blue, green and red) that mimic the natural 24-hour sun cycle.

“The name ‘Naturelight’ is inspired by nature, and how vegetables react naturally, in a quest to help consumers live healthier lifestyles. Periodic and homogenous application of the optimum combination of blue, green, and red lights and darkness, simulates the daylight cycle in the crisper. This is therefore beneficial in helping to preserve vitamin content in fruits and vegetables for longer by simulating the best spectrum in natural daylight cycle, just like in the field.”

Using smart technology, right here in our own homes, we can maximise the nutritional value of our fresh produce.
