If there’s one dish that truly tastes like Durban, it has to be Bunny Chow!
Hirsch’s Ballito celebrated Heritage Month with a special edition of its popular Kitchen Capers series. The morning was filled with delicious food, warm conversation and plenty of Durban flavour.
Award-winning Chef Munira Khader joined us for the event. She treated guests to a special Bunny Chow cooking demonstration.
It’s All About the Bunny!
Chef Munira, recipient of the Best Indian Restaurant 2025 Award, certainly knows her way around a curry.
During the demonstration, she shared her tips for creating an authentic Bunny Chow. Guests learned how to choose the right spices and build layers of flavour.
Chef Munira then prepared a rich and delicious curry. She served it the traditional Durban way, inside a hollowed-out loaf of fresh bread.
Of course, there was plenty of tasting too!
Guests had the chance to enjoy the finished dish and experience those wonderful Durban flavours for themselves.
Celebrating Heritage, One Curry at a Time
Food has a special way of bringing people together. Bunny Chow is a wonderful example of this.
The dish has its roots in Durban’s Indian community. Over the years, it has become an iconic part of KwaZulu-Natal’s food culture.
Heritage Month gives us a chance to celebrate the traditions and cultures that make South Africa unique. Food plays an important role in sharing those stories.
